Michael Wells, a South Bronx-based writer, has been obsessed with genre since his parents bought him a fire-breathing, 3-foot-tall Godzilla toy when he was four. That toy sparked his love for the monster and the marginalized. His passion for creating layered, character-driven dramas with supernatural and fantastical elements allows him to craft stories that turn the mundane into magic while tackling paramount social issues. As a believer in the power of speculative fiction to promote a more equitable future, Michael focuses on crafting narratives that challenge the white gaze. In addition to his career as a writer, Michael has worked as a teacher, music industry assistant, and commercial editor & producer. He graduated from the CUNY Baccalaureate Program with a Bachelor of Science in Film and Television Production. In addition to being a VONA alumnus, Michael is a 2023 Orchard Project Episodic fellow, an Austin Film Festival 2nd Rounder (2022), and a 2023 Essence Film Festival official selection (pilot).
Michael recently signed with HG Literary as he completes his debut graphic novel and works on an adult fiction novel. This new partnership adds to his impressive accomplishments and further solidifies his position as a talented and promising genre writer within the industry. With his unique background and dedication to crafting compelling stories, Michael is poised to significantly impact the world of television, literature, and beyond.
